Ahern Family
Maurice Ahern (d. 1902) m. Ellen Haley (1828-1881)
. Maurice
Ahern (various spellings Morris Ahearn or Hearn) came to Cambridge, MA from Co.
Cork Ireland. He married Ellen Haley in Massachusetts. Ellen Haley had a younger
brother Tom, 4 sisters, and 2 older brothers. The 2 eldest brothers came to MA
from Ireland and saved enough money to send for their sisters and younger
brother. Two of the sisters were Francie who married a Willie Driscoll, and
Louisa who married a Mr. Crotty.
Maurice and Ellen Ahern are buried in the St. John’s Catholic Cemetery in
Cambridge, MA. They lived in that area near or on Sherman St. in Cambridge, MA.
The tombstone in the same plot (next to Maurice and Ellen’s stone) reads:
"Michael Ahern, in memory of his brother Dennis Ahern d. 1851 aged 65
years, from County Cork Ireland"; and "Mother - Bridget Ahern aged 69
years" [b. ca.1782] these are very likely direct relatives of Maurice
Ahern.
Maurice and Ellen Ahern’s children were:
- Bridget
- Mary Elizabeth "Lizzie" b. 1862
- Julia b. circa 1866
- Margaret E. b. circa
- Hannah Louise b. Oct. 1868
Notes on their children:
- Bridget Ahern married John Lynch in Cambridge, MA.
- Mary
Elizabeth "Lizzie" Ahern
was born on April 17th,
1862 (she is pictured to the left). She married John B. Brady, a baker by
profession, and lived in Cambridge, MA. They lived at DeWolf St. and later
Green St. in Cambridge in the late 1880’s. Eventually the family moved to
147 Sherman St. after her father’s death. Their children were: John,
William, Josephine, Mary Elizabeth, Margaret (died age 7), and Charles.
Lizzie Brady died in 1934.
- No notes for Julia Ahern. She did not appear on the 1880 census with her
family perhaps because she was married or working outside of the home.
- Margaret E. Ahern appeared on the 1880 census living with her family.
She did not appear in the 1900 census with her father and sister. It is
presumed that she married or worked outside of the home as soon as she was
old enough.
- Hannah Louise Ahern was a dressmaker and lived at 147 Sherman St.
Cambridge. She appeared in the 1888, 1889, and 1890 Cambridge City
Directory as Miss Louise Ahern, Dressmaker. She also appeared in the 1900
Census living with her father.
